Making health a priority.
The Herbal Connection
April 1999

Businesses today understand that we have lost our sense of wellbeing and are looking for a
quick-fix! That explains why last year only a few of the top twenty five syndicated advertisers cheerfully spent for
almost half a billion dollars promoting their deadly luxuries. These giant corporations feel that it is important
enough to get their message to the public consistently. As advertising has become more effective and the health
of our nation continues to suffer, we remain silent. In fact, we accept this new environment which devours all the
resources of the poor and gives only three percent back. I argue that advertising is not the most powerful way to
spread messages of good health. To teach our community we dont need billions, we need love. Love for our
neighbor and for ourselves, then we must spread this love!
It is a marketing fact that word of mouth is more effective than advertising. Do you believe that they
would consistently spend this money if you were not supporting them, by burning nicotine, gulping alcohol,
devouring red meat and satisfying that caffeine addiction. Why is it that the poorest communities have the
fanciest automobiles and fashions, and the poorest health as well? Some say nicotine and alcohol help to relieve
stress, I argue that their is no stress worthy of genocide. We must love ourselves to the end. Although, others
argue that they have to die of something, and they would rather choose to die from using cigarettes or alcohol. I
argue that death by lung or prostate cancer is a horrid torture, worst than living with asthma or some disability.
African Americans in Onondaga County have a high incidence of chronic disease. The 1999-2004
targeted community assessment states that, African American males have death rates 40% higher for lung cancer
than their white counterparts. Two Onondaga county residents die from smoking related illness each day, 23% of
Onondaga county residents are regular smokers, and the remainder are children under 18years of age. Onondaga
county recently voted to remove self service tobacco displays, eliminating this access to the youth.
Nearly 40% of African American residents of Syracuse live in poverty, and 41,000 Onondaga residents
lack health insurance. Poverty is not the only element to blame for the high incidence of chronic disease, I
believe that ignorance and culture are the key. Even rich individuals continue to neglect colon cancer screening
after age 40. Prostate cancer killed President Mobutu in Zaire, a Billionaire among the worlds most powerful ,
didnt diagnose his own cancer early enough to remove it or treat it effectively.
. African American males are at the greatest risk of prostate cancer; based on national data. African
American women account for 8.2% of the countries female population, and 3.4% of all breast cancer deaths,
although this is low with delayed detection this average mortality is more than that of Whites. I am not
advocating any particular treatment but encouraging you to understand your health. Nutrition is the key to cancer
prevention. In a study funded by the American Institute of Cancer Research, Dr. T. Colon Campbell concluded
that dietary causes of degenerative diseases include over-consumption of dietary fats and deficiency of
antioxidants. Simply put, you are what you eat! Avoid foods high in dioxin - beef, pork, shellfish, long-lived
fish, and milk-fat. Dioxin, the super-toxic hormone disrupter, bio-accumulates in animal fat. It is extremely
harmful to the immune system.
Kathy Turner M.P.H., Director of the Bureau of health promotion and disease prevention stated
reworking some of the old familiar recipes can be a start to better diet. All those interested in the health of our
community should contact her at the health department, and participate in spreading messages of good health .
Our health should be our number one priority. Our bodies most important needs are forgotten as we face
everyday tribulation. where does your health fall in your list of priorities? To comment please
